Anxiety is defined as “an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts and physical changes like increased blood pressure” by the American Psychological Association (APA).

In today’s world, it is necessary to understand the difference between normal feelings of anxiety and its disorder because if you have the later, you will need proper medical supervision. Initially, the anxiety symptoms might not seem obvious but they tend to grow over time and might reach a point when the situation would become too much to handle.
Major anxiety disorders are generally seen to be more prevalent in women as compared to men. Even though anxiety disorders appear familial, environmental influences adds to the manifestation of this condition.
Anxiety disorders often co-occur with somatic symptom disorders, major depression, substance abuse disorders, personality disorders and more. It is also strongly linked to agoraphobia and panic disorder.
GAD or Generalized Anxiety Disorder is a chronic disorder which is denoted by excessive worry and anxiety. GAD does not take into account the general medical condition or substance abuse in its diagnosis and has symptoms such as sweating, nausea, cold or clammy hands, muscle tension, dry mouth, and urinary frequency. And, the psychological signs include difficulty concentrating, irritability, and sleep disturbance.
When there are repeated episodes of sudden feelings that strike a sense of terror or fear at random, chances are, you are having a panic attack. Profuse sweating, chest pain, and rapid heartbeat (palpitations) are common. It often gives a sense of choking or that of a heart attack.
Also referred to as social phobia, this involves high levels of anxiety, fear and avoidance of social situations because of premonition and overwhelming feelings. It comes with feelings of self-consciousness, embarrassment, and concern about being wrongly judged by others. People with this condition have a fixation about being embarrassed or ridiculed by others.
