Depression (major depressive disorder or clinical depression) is a common and serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. To be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least two weeks. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), in 2021 there were about 14.5 million U.S. adults (aged 18 or older) who had at least one major depressive episode with severe impairment in the past year.
